World Championship XXVIII
World Championship XXVIII is an invitation-only tournament. To be eligible to receive an invitation to participate in World Championship XXVIII, players must meet the following criteria:
Invitation Criteria
- The World Championship XXVII Winner
- The Top 6 finishers from the Innistrad Championship
- The Top 6 finishers from the Neon Dynasty Championship
- The Top 6 finishers from the New Capenna Championship
- The five (5) MPL or Rivals players with the most World Championship Qualifying Points during the 2021-2022 Season.
- The eight (8) non-MPL and non-Rivals players with the most World Championship Qualifying Points during the 2021-2022 Season.
- A number of "at-large" invitations from all players with the most World Championship Qualifying Points during the 2021-2022 Season sufficient to bring the total number of invitations for World Championship XXVIII to thirty-two (32).
Note: The World Champion and players that earn invitation with a Top 6 finish are not considered when determining invitations based on World Championship Qualifying Point totals—the five (5) MPL or Rivals players; eight (8) non-MPL and non-Rivals players; and any necessary at-large invitations.
If a player is invited based on two or more of the above criteria, invitations do not pass down to the next highest finisher for each criterion. For each invitation criterion that a player achieves beyond the first, another "World Championship Qualifying Points" at-large invitation will be added.
Passdowns (as described above) will be evaluated in the order as listed in the "Invitation Criteria" section above.
World Championship Qualifying Points
World Championship Qualifying Points are earned by competitors in the three (3) Championships run during the 2021-2022 Season. These points are used to determine certain invitations to World Championship XXVIII.
A player's World Championship Qualifying Point total will be:
- the total match points from the Swiss rounds in each of the three (3) Championships run during the 2021-2022 season (this includes match points earned through byes awarded in Swiss rounds once a player earns their 12th win in a single Championship); and
- Four (4) additional points for each 7th and 8th place finish in each Championships run during the 2021-2022 Season
If two or more players have the same World Championship Qualifying Points total, the tie will be broken as follows:
- The tied player with the most total match points from a single Championship during the 2021-2022 season in which that player participated; or
- The tied player with the next best match points from single Championship during the 2021-2022 season in which that player participated; or
- The tied player with the best finish from among the Championships during the 2021-2022 season in which that player participated; or
- The tied player with the second-best finish from among the Championships during the 2021-2022 season in which that player participated; or
- The tied player with the lowest place total (calculated by adding up the placing numbers from each Championship during the 2021-2022 season in which that player participated. Lowest total is best).
