Last weekend, over 130 of the best Magic players from across Brazil met in São Paulo for the City Class Games Showdown, Brazil’s Regional Championship. Eight invites to Pro Tour: March of the Machine were on the line, as well as a seat at the World Championship. After eight rounds of Standard play followed by the Top 8, Adriano Melo emerged victorious. Congratulations to Adriano Melo, Brazil’s Regional Champion!
Melo piloted Grixis Midrange to his Regional Championship win, defeating Vagner William Casatti, also on Grixis Midrange, in the finals. The match went to a full three games, and while both players qualified for the Pro Tour this weekend, it was Melo who took home the trophy and an invite to the World Championship.
THE TOP 8 & THE PRO TOUR
Congratulations to the Top 8 of the City Class Games Showdown, who earned invites to Pro Tour: March of the Machine. While six different Standard archetypes made the Top 8, Grixis Midrange, the favorite pick of the weekend, prevailed in all of its quarterfinals matches, and filled both seats in the finals.
Jorgemi Sant’Anna also managed a back-to-back Regional Championship Top 8. He followed up his second-place finish at the last City Class Games Showdown in November with another appearance, and Pro Tour invite, this weekend.

THE METAGAME
It was perhaps unsurprising to see Grixis Midrange ultimately wind up at the top of the standings, as the City Class Games Showdown Standard metagame reflected the deck’s overall popularity in Standard right now. However, the deck still accounted for less than a third of the field, with Mono-White Midrange being the next most popular choice, followed by the ever-present Mono-Red Aggro and potential rising star Azorius Soldiers.
And while Adriano Melo piloted Grixis Midrange to victory in Brazil, the deck didn’t fare as well in other Regional Championships that also happened around the world this past weekend. Standard is still developing, and there are four more weekends of Regional Championships to see where it takes us!
It was a great weekend full of terrific and hard-fought matches in São Paulo, and we can’t wait to see how these players fare at the Pro Tour in May! Congratulations again to Adriano Melo, and to Brazil on another great Regional Championship.
