Awesome Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Standard Decks (And Where to Find Them)

April 20, 2020
Adam Styborski

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths is here—and Standard is changing. With MagicFest Online qualifiers underway again today through MTG Arena, as well as a slew of qualifiers (including Super Qualifiers!) on Magic Online, getting up to speed with the newest builds and decks in Standard can make all the difference in the world.

Here are some of the latest decklists and places to get started with even more.

A First Look at Ikoria Standard

With a Standard Challenge event running over the weekend, a handful of decklists refreshed with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths cards are already out in the competitive wild.

Thommimp's first place take on Jeskai Fires added the companion Keruga, the Macrosage, which wasn't much of an adjustment, to add in guaranteed card draw. And as you'd expect, both Raugrin Triome and Savai Triome added powerful mana fixing with a cycling out to ensure there's no issues with casting Teferi, Time Raveler into Fires of Invention on curve.

Similarly to Thommimp, GodOfSlaughter updated and existing deck to take advantage of a companion. Rakdos Sacrifice, tweaked to use just odd converted mana cost card, gets the power of Obosh, the Preypiercer. Mayhem Devil, the unassuming new common Serrated Scorpion, and a pile of other one- and three-drop creatures create even more headaches for opponents. And as a bonus, Lurrus of the Dream-Den isn't a companion here but still works as an odd-mana creature that lets you bring back Witch's Oven or Serrated Scorpion for another round once it hits play.

Not every existing Standard deck picked up adjustment to add a companion. Player kcomedina's Azorius Control deck instead leaned into powerful new blue cards: Voracious Greatshark, a counterspell stapled onto a 5/4 body—or vice versa if you read it the other way around, and Shark Typhoon, which can cycle into an uncounterable X/X flying creature or sit in play as an enchantment that turns every Absorb and Essence Scatter into another threat as well.

SknerusMcKwacz brought one of the breakout decks of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Standard to bear with a Bant Gyruda deck. Using just even converted mana cost cards, plus three more copies of Gyruda, Doom of Depths in the main deck, you play out like the midrange Ramp decks of recent Standard until you can cast the namesake companion. Hitting Spark Double in a graveyard means you repeat the process of grabbing a creature with even converted mana cost again. Thassa, Deep-Dwelling is both easy to turn into a creature and lets you blink Spark Double, Gyruda, or any other value creature you have in play. It's fun, powerful, and a novel intersection of the old Azorius Blink and Bant Ramp decks from before.

If you like casting a lot of spells, Izzet Phoenix is back! Player aManatease revisited a deck that long ago fell out of Standard favor, thanks to powerful new cards from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Cathartic Reunion; Rielle, the Everwise; and Sprite Dragon all power each other up, and even The Royal Scions get a chance to shine here. The namesake Arclight Phoenix is a recursive threat that benefits from chaining spells together, and overall you're aiming to win before opponents get ahead—not unlike the Simic and Temur Flash decks from more recent Standard.

Another fun deck from the Standard Challenge was thebuttermerchant's Dimir Flash deck. While Slitherwisp doesn't trigger when you cast an instant, there are plenty of permanents with flash to work with in Standard. Cunning Nightbonder, out of the sideboard, can put a damper on other decks' countermagic and ensure you win the wars over more expensive haymakers. An early Slitherwisp will net a pile of extra cards, and because it's not legendary they stack up to quickly overwhelm an opponent with advantage.

These decks were just a sample from the Top 8 of a Standard Challenge. Be sure to check out all of the Top 32 for even more updated Standard options to try.
