Rank Up to the Mythic Invitational and Beyond in MTG Arena

January 16, 2020
Adam Styborski

It's 2020 and you've made your resolution for the new year: Rank up to the top on MTG Arena. Are you ready to become a champion?

The first step is the easiest: If you haven't already, download and start playing MTG Arena for free today. Then take a quick run through the MTG Arena Starter Guide to add your friends in the game, see where you can begin playing, find a few tips on where to pick up the best strategies, and score a pile of free card packs to kick start your journey.

The second step is harder: It's time to start winning games of Magic.

Rank Up with Ranked Play

Ranked Play is where the world competes on MTG Arena. From the first-time competitor all the way up to the titans in the Magic Pro League, Ranked Play modes are where you test your skill and prove you're ready to take on the best.

Ranked Play covers several event formats, but you'll always have Standard Ranked and Ranked Draft available:

  • Standard Ranked uses the most recently released Magic sets where you construct your own deck from cards in your collection
  • Ranked Draft uses a 14-card Limited Booster from a set where you take turns choosing cards from packs to build your own deck, limited to just the cards you chose

These modes are the core of unlocking invitation to the biggest in-game events by earning your way to Mythic ranking. Beginning at Bronze rank, and with four tiers at each rank, winning games of Magic through Ranked Play modes lets you play against stronger and stronger competition until you hit Mythic—and each mode has its own track. You can play either to rank up, but Standard Ranked and Ranked Draft will only count towards your rank in its format.

Each rank—Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Mythic—you unlock ensures more prizes. For the current January 2020 Season, here's what you'll be awarded for the rank you earn:

  • Bronze: 1 Throne of Eldraine booster pack
  • Silver: 1 Throne of Eldraine booster pack + 500 gold
  • Gold: 2 Throne of Eldraine booster packs + 1000 gold + Hypnotic Sprite Card Style
  • Platinum: 3 Throne of Eldraine booster packs + 1000 gold + Hypnotic Sprite and Wildborn Preserver Card Styles
  • Diamond: 4 Throne of Eldraine booster packs + 1000 gold + Hypnotic Sprite and Wildborn Preserver Card Styles
  • Mythic: 5 Throne of Eldraine booster packs + 1000 gold + Hypnotic Sprite and Wildborn Preserver Card Styles

And once the January 2020 Season ends on January 31st, you'll start the February 2020 Season close to the rank and tier you ended in:

Mythic Rank and "the Top 1,200"

Making it to Mythic means you're a strong MTG Arena players, but not one of the best—not yet. That's reserved for the Top 1,200 players at Mythic rank. Once you're Mythic ranked, as you continue to play your wins will move you higher and higher in percentage until it finally shows you a number: Your place in the top 1,200 players. Of course, that position changes dynamically even when you're not playing as it's always relative to the success and skill of others at the top of Mythic rank. But earning a top 1,200 position when the season end is calculated will unlock an invitation to a Mythic Qualifier or Mythic Point Challenge the following month.
