Yiren Jiang Triumphs at MTG China Open

March 29, 2023

Last weekend, over 150 of the best Magic players from across China met in Beijing for the MTG China Open, China’s Regional Championship. Eight invites to Pro Tour: March of the Machine were on the line, as well as a seat at the World Championship. After eight rounds of Standard play followed by the Top 8, Yiren Jiang emerged victorious. Congratulations to Yiren Jiang, China’s Regional Champion!

Congratulations to champion Yiren Jiang!

Jiang piloted Mono-White Midrange to his Regional Championship win, defeating Bin Jia on Grixis Midrange in the finals. Jiang chose a build of Mono-White that included two Field of Ruin and two Demolition Field, which have proven to be a powerful tool in a Standard field populated by three-color decks. While Mono-White Midrange fell in popularity this weekend, it proved to be a perfect choice for Jiang.

THE TOP 8 & THE PRO TOUR

Congratulations to the Top 8 of the MTG China Open Regional Championship, who earned invites to Pro Tour: March of the Machine. Grixis Midrange made up more than half of the Top 8, with Rakdos Reanimator, Esper Legends, Mono-White Midrange, and the surprising Izzet Powerstones rounded out the bracket.

Pok Man Chan also managed a back-to-back Regional Championship Top 8 this weekend. Chan won the Hong Kong-based Regional Championship last cycle, which was divided into four smaller events due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. He followed up that win with a Top 8 appearance in Beijing this weekend, earning him another Pro Tour invite.

Congratulations to Yiren Jiang, Bin Jia, Qiang Lei, Tianyou Wu, Pok Man Chan, Muhan Yu, Yang Feng, and Sun Chuan

A WORLDS INVITE AWARDED

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the first Regional Championship in China in December was divided into four smaller events around the country. While this awarded the eight Pro Tour invites, it left the World Championship invite unresolved. In Beijing last weekend, the top two finishers from each of those events played for an invite to the World Championship. Congratulations to the winner, Sui Dong! See you at the World Championship!

THE METAGAME

The metagame at the Regional Championship in China reflected Grixis Midrange’s enduring popularity in the Standard metagame, with the popular deck making up a quarter of the total field and ultimately half of the Top 8. It was an impressive tournament for Grixis, which has remained a favorite but whose metagame share isn’t always reflected at the top of the standings.

Selesnya Toxic was much more popular in Beijing than it has been at other Regional Championships, and was the third most popular deck in the field. And despite its slipping popularity, Mono-White Midrange took home the trophy in both Ottawa and Beijing this weekend.

It was a great weekend full of terrific and hard-fought matches in Beijing, and we can’t wait to see how these players fare at the Pro Tour in May! Congratulations again to Yiren Jiang, and to China on another great Regional Championship.
