Eternal Weekend 2020 on Magic Online

October 07, 2020
Wizards of the Coast

Join us on Magic Online for Eternal Weekend 2020, featuring back-to-back weekends of events—October 16-18 and 23-25—with access to almost every card on Magic Online while you participate!

Eternal Weekend is a celebration of Magic's beginnings, featuring both Vintage and Legacy formats where the most iconic cards in the game's history are still played. Nostalgia, skill, and the thrill of the most powerful plays in Magic await everyone who plays in Eternal Weekend, something MPL player and Magic Hall of Fame member Eric Froehlich shared in great detail.

Magic is filled with memories.

This year, we're bringing the Eternal Weekend experience to Magic Online. From the comfort of home, everyone can battle against the best Legacy and Vintage players for amazing prizes—including the exclusive new artwork versions of oversized cards Maze of Ith, Library of Alexandria, and more.

Even better, as with recent Eternal format events available at Gen Con Online and PAX Online, every player participating in Eternal Weekend will have their account granted temporary access to nearly every card in Magic. Vintage or Legacy, any deck you want to use to prepare and play in the events will be at your fingertips. Whether you're just getting started or a seasoned veteran, Eternal Weekend is open for everyone to sign up and play.

We look forward to sharing Magic's history with you with at these two weekends of events later this month. Check out all the details below to get started now!

How To Participate

To participate, you'll need a full Magic Online account. If you don't have one yet, create a Magic Online account and upgrade from a basic account to a full account by purchasing the Account Upgrade Kit.

After you have your full account, buy the Entry Token for the events you want to participate in. Each entry token costs $25.00 USD and will be available starting at 10:00 AM PT on the Monday prior to the weekend's events (October 12 for Legacy Eternal Weekend and October 19 for Vintage Eternal Weekend). After your purchase is processed, you'll have access to almost every card in Magic Online until the Wednesday following the event you purchased entry to.

To start brewing decks, head to the Collection, add a deck for the correct format and start adding cards. If an added card is illegal or unavailable, the card will be highlighted in your deck and right-clicking on it will let you know what the problem is.

Alternatively, if you're looking for ideas, head over to our Decklists page and check out decks that have done well in recent events. You can browse through recent event and League results, and either tinker as you see fit or head over to the Play Lobby and take the deck for a test drive.

When you're ready to get some games in, go to the Constructed play lobby and select the format that matches your deck. There you can join the Open Play or Tournament Practice room to get some practice games in, or if you're ready battle players for prizes, you can join a League. Leagues let you play on your schedule and reward you based on how many wins you earn over the course of five matches.

When it is time to join your Eternal Weekend event, find the Eternal Weekend Premier Event that you want to play in in that same Constructed Play Lobby. Premier Events are at the top of the list and feature a gold border. Make sure you join before the event starts and are available when it launches since online tournaments will not wait for you to show up.

During each match you'll have a 25-minute timer and once that timer runs out you lose the match regardless of how many games have been played, so make sure you're watching your clock. In addition to your match timer, each player has an inactivity timer. For this event if you don't take a game action for fifteen minutes, not only will you lose your match, you'll also be ejected from the event, so make sure you set aside time to complete your matches.

A round ends after each match has finished. The next round begins after a quick two-minute break. Each event will have a number of Swiss-pairing rounds based on the players who have entered before cutting to a single-elimination Top 8. Magic Online will take care of all the parings, reporting, and prizes. You just need to make sure you're at your computer when your matches start.

If you win an Eternal Weekend event, you will be contacted by a Wizards of the Coast representative within 72 hours of the event to verify account information. You will be contacted via the email address associated with your Magic Online account, so make sure your account information is up to date.

As a premier event, this event also follows our premier event rules, which can be found below.

Legal Information

Magic Online Premier Play Eligibility

For these eligibility rules, Magic Online Premier Play is defined as any Magic Online tournament or event whose prize structure includes one or more invitations to a future Magic Split Championship event (Series or Finals), Magic Online Champions Showcase event, Magic Mythic Championship event, or another tournament or event that is deemed to be part of the Magic Online Premier Play system.

All Magic Online players who meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein are eligible to compete in Magic Online Premier Play except (a) players who are otherwise ineligible to engage in tournament play pursuant to the Magic Online User Agreement and (b) employees and their immediate family members, or contractors of Wizards of the Coast LLC ("Wizards"), Hasbro, Inc. ("Hasbro"), or each of their respective subsidiaries or affiliates or their advertising or promotion agencies, or those who have been disqualified for other reasons (see below). This is a skill-based tournament based on a player's ability to defeat other players.

Players must be Magic Online account holders in good standing and in compliance with the Magic Online User Agreement in order to participate in Magic Online Premier Play. Players may be disqualified from Premier Play (including Eternal Weekend events) if they are suspended from Magic Online for any reason, including without limitation, a violation of the Magic Online User Agreement.

To be eligible to participate in Magic Online Premier Play, the following requirements must be met:

  • Players must be at least 18 years of age to qualify for the Magic Online Champions Showcase, Magic: The Gathering Split Championships, or other related premier play. If a player under the age of 18 would earn prizes that include an invitation for one of these events, the invitation will pass down to the next eligible player as described in the Prizes section below.
  • Players must have internet access.
  • Players must have access to a personal computer.

Players are not permitted to have more than one of their accounts entered in any single event at one time. Players are not permitted to have any accounts entered in events played by other players for any reason. If a player is discovered to have more than one account playing in an Eternal Weekend on Magic Online event before, during, or after the event, Wizards may take action against that player's account(s), up to and including disqualification with no refund of product and/or event tickets, suspension of the offending account(s), and/or termination of the offending account(s). Using an account other than your own, allowing any other player to use your account, selling your account, and other similar actions are all violations of the Magic Online User Agreement. If you play in Magic Online tournaments, win, and expect to get your prize, be very, very sure you are playing on your own account. We do not recognize excuses, such as "I and a friend jointly own the account," "It's my brother's account but he gave it to me," or similar.

Wizards of the Coast reserves the right to reschedule and/or restart tournaments, matches, extend timers and/or games as needed. Such decisions will be announced on the Magic Online website, via @MagicOnline on Twitter, and/or within the Magic Online client as needed.

Prizes

All prizes are awarded "AS IS" and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose). This is a game of skill and, therefore, there are no odds of winning as is the case with a game of chance. All applicable taxes, fees, duties, tariffs, passport or visa costs, and any license, destination, entry, exit and/or delivery charges are the sole responsibility of each player, and players acknowledge Wizards' recommendation that they consult a tax advisor in their jurisdiction for questions regarding their tax liabilities.

If a player wins that is later deemed ineligible to earn prizes in sanctioned tournaments (such as he or she is suspended and/or a paid contractor), then the physical prize will pass down to the player with the next best finish in that event. The final Swiss standings of the Split Championship Series tournament will determine the difference between third and fourth place and the difference between fifth through eighth place, should that be necessary.

In either of the above cases, the digital prizes, such as booster packs or Play Points, will not pass down to the next player.

Wizards of the Coast may modify, suspend, and/or cancel an event, substitute prizes, or change the costs and/or schedule for an event without notice, at its sole discretion.

Event Integrity

If, in the sole judgment of Wizards of the Coast and its representatives, a system error, tournament or rules bug, or other issue has significantly compromised the integrity of the event, Wizards of the Coast retains the right to modify the tournament structure as needed to maintain as fair and competitive an experience as possible for all players.

Occasionally while playing Magic Online, Wizards of the Coast staff (marked by a Wizards of the Coast logo beside their online name) may ask players for their name and/or contact information. Failure to provide accurate information may result in significant penalties, up to and including disqualification with no refund of product and/or event tickets, suspension of the offending account(s), and/or termination of the offending account(s).

Do not give out your information to anyone who is not Wizards of the Coast Staff. Wizards of the Coast staff members will never ask for your password.
