Esports Update – 2020 Season Grand Finals and Qualifier Weekends

August 14, 2020
Ben Drago and Bear Watson

Two weeks ago we watched the exciting conclusion to the Top 8 of the Players Tour Finals. Congratulations again to Kristof Prinz and his incredible comeback win!

We're now just a few weeks away from our next event—the 2020 Mythic Invitational on September 10-13—and the first Qualifier Weekends of the 2020-21 Magic Esports season. While we're still finalizing event details and incorporating player feedback for the season, we wanted to share some key dates and information for competitors before Zendikar Rising arrives.

2020 Season Grand Finals

Mark your calendars on October 9-11 for the 2020 Season Grand Finals! An elite 32 players—the top 16 from the Players Tour Finals and the Top 16 from the 2020 Mythic Invitational—will compete for $250,000 in prizes on MTG Arena, broadcasting live all three days on twitch.tv/magic.

We'll be announcing complete details, including the structure and format, soon.

Zendikar Rising Qualifier Weekends

The next steps to the Zendikar Rising Championship kick off this September with the first Zendikar Rising Qualifier Weekend. In total, three Qualifier Weekends for the Zendikar Rising Championship will take place:

Qualifier Weekend Format Qualification Method from Ranked Play
September 12-13, 2020 Historic Constructed Be Top 1,200 in Limited or Constructed in June, July, or August 2020 Ranked Seasons
October 24-25, 2020 Standard Constructed Be Top 1,200 in Limited or Constructed in September 2020 Ranked Season
November 7-8, 2020 Standard Constructed Be Top 1,200 in Limited or Constructed in October 2020 Ranked Season

Just like the previous Mythic Qualifiers, Qualifier Weekends are two-day events where each win earns you more gems on MTG Arena and winning seven matches each day advances you to the next stage: from Day One to Day Two of the Qualifier Weekend, then from Day Two of the Qualifier Weekend to the Zendikar Rising Championship.

The September Qualifier Weekend takes place at the same time as the 2020 Mythic Invitational Top 8 playoffs, giving everyone an opportunity to see what's successful in Historic before jumping into Day One.

The complete Qualifier Weekend information has all the details, including more ways to qualify than being a top Mythic-ranked player. We look forward to seeing Historic play out over September 12 and 13!

The 2020-21 Season

As we did in the lead up to our 2020-21 season announcement, we're continuing to listen to your feedback about structures, qualifying paths, and opportunities for play through MTG Arena for the next year of competition. We're working behind the scenes to identify necessary changes and ways to improve your experiences, balancing competing needs against the challenging world we live in today.

Our systems are complex and there are a lot of things to consider, which means we aren't always ready to reply to you immediately. Thank you again for the patience, persistence, and passion you share with us for Magic esports. We’ll update you on any changes in the next Esports Update.
